Meet Oma B Thursday, 03 March 3:24 pm
Martijn's grandmother on his mothers side, Oma B as we like to call her, is an artist. Her name is Anneke Boonstra and she is 89 going on 90 years old this year. She's had an intersting life being born in Holland but having grown up in Indonesia (formerly a dutch colony), from the time she was six months old, where her father was a school teacher and principal. She came to Holland when she was 17 years old and met her husband while studying chemistry at the university in delft.
She was very shy and never let anyone know she loved to draw when she was young. In 1941 she got married and lived in Amsterdam with her husband who was a photographer.
She never got around to drawing as a hobby (openly) until they got a boat in the 70's and at that time her husband was often tired and under the weather so she had lots of time to draw as a passtime.

My intention when we first got this web adress was to have a section dedicated to Oma B and her art but that never happend cos it turned into just being a blog that we don't use enough. Anyhow I'd like to take this opprotunity to share a little bit about her life and some examples of her work.

martijn's grandparents and great grandfather during the war

Oma B once told me about her life during world war II and she mentioned how her father-in-law, on the left hand side in the picture above, was a baker/baking instructor. His skill came in handy keeping them fed through those times. Oma B. gave birth to her eldest of her three daughters during the wartime. Martijn's mother, Nicoline, is her youngest girl.

After the death of her husband in 1991 she moved from Amsterdam to Amstelveen and began taking art classes. She is a prolific artist and makes lovely dutch art.
Now I'm gonna display some examples of Anneke Boonstra a.k.a. Oma B.'s artwork. Enjoy.

John Titor Wednesday, 23 March 11:21 am

On a recent surfing spree, I came across the modern legend of John Titor. It's not that I believe this myth, but I am really fascinated by this story for various reasons.

First follow the link above to wikipedia (gotta love it) to get a general idea of what I am talking about. If you want more go here to read all of his posts.*

First of all, I think being able to be just credible enough to pull this sh1t off is an amazing feat, and I just really like people who do this for the f0ck of it, as I used to say. While not entirely within the scope of de vereniging, I certainly would've made this guy honorary member if there ever was such a thing (that applies to both de vereniging and its honorary members).

I've loved the many worlds theory long before I loved the eels. Somehow I've felt somewhere that this must be the way things are(tm) before I even heard of it. And thanks to VPRO's Noorderlicht (please bring it back) I heard of it pretty early in life. Picking this as a starting point when faking to be a time traveler is a pretty obvious choice though.

I like seeing this as if it were a movie or a book, but presented to the world in a different way. The posts just spark your imagination, and it's a very good 'what if' story, especially if you consider how close Titors history fits in with our current state of affairs. I think his predictions/memories are still slightly plausible to happen right now even. In fact the biggest issue that makes me not believe any of it is John's absolute silence on 9-11, only 6 months before it was set to happen. Of course, in his world, this whole thing might not have happened (although I can not imagine how this 'police state' would have evolved in the US without it) or he would have had 'some reason' to keep it to himself.

Seems to me that if he would have played it smart (as in not revealing he's a time traveller but mentioning date, time, flight numbers, and of course names) he could have prevented this from happening, which would probably prevent the entire world nukeing he speaks of entirely. Would he really be convinced life is so much better in his time, with 3 billion people less to worry about? Maybe.

Aside from the whole civil war going on in the US, the rest of the story is totally possible. But I guess it is not that hard to imagine that the true feelings come out once western supremacy crumbles. I'm not so sure why Russia would nuke all of us, but I certainly do not like the russian government as it is now, which isn't great hope for the future.**

Being a bit of a nerd, I like the sci-fi story of a person haveing to travel back in time because of the 2038 unix issue (this is actually how I ended up on John Titor to begin with), to retrieve an IBM 5100 in order to read and debug ancient computer code. The fact that, according to wikipedia, the 5100's ability to read all of IBM's ancient code was not known at the time of posting makes it all extra juicy.

This could be some sick phycisist nutcase, some anarchistic left wing militarist, a lonely soul, or just a smart prankster. I just enjoy this tremendously.

Even though the website of the John Titor foundation is aweful (in itself proving the hoax), and the prankster obviously makes big bucks off this, I want to have the book, and of course, the IBM 5100. You never know.

* Those of you wise enough to have pop-up blocking turned on (f*ck the googlebar, why not use a decent browser to begin with?), sorry, this site has a pop-under and for that reason probably should be boycotted (thanks firefox ;)) .

** In fact, I read one Michael Moore book (Dude where's my country) which contained the frase 'I like Putin'. Pretty much in response of GWB not liking him (because of Iraq reasons. Aside from that Bush seems to love Putin almost as much as Michael does). Nice one Michael, now we all know you spend more time and effort at Burger King than actually following world news.
