Belle & Sebastian Thursday, 01 April 02:29 am
martijn and i just got back from seeing belle and sebsastian. it was sooooooooooo good.. they played for two hours straight. and they also played stuff from all the albums and i think from all the e.p.'s/singles. they played my favorite song 'you made me forget my dreams.' aw. it was so nice. so yeah. i got to see b&s for the 2nd time. horray.

i shouted lots of things during the show and was very enthusiastic. i think i embarrassed martijn. but whatever, right. the crowd was kinda weird at first. nobody moved much which i just didnt understand. did i mention how damn tall dutch people are ever before? cos they are so tall i feel short, which is something i hardly ever felt back home. so when im at a show in holland im usually staring at some tall guys back. but this one guy saw how much i loved the show he let me stand in front of him which was really nice.

the venue was also weird. it looked like a parliament or something. it was round and the seating was so the stage looked like it was surrounded by a jury. i didnt expect it when i walked in. the place was pretty full and i freaked out cos i wasnt gonna have a good spot cos the venue was shaped so goofy. but it turned out okay. i was standing on the floor which wasnt very big so i was fairly close.

it was a very cool night. the opening band was really good too. they were called bauer and i learned they come outta amsterdam from breun. they kinda reminded me of rilo kiley. it wasnt a bad way to start the evening.

i cant wait to see b&s again at coachella . i hope it doesnt conflict with something else on the bill i wanna see.

Nu even niet... Thursday, 15 April 10:57 am
It is becoming very clear to me lately that me and the well known provider of imaging solutions have to part sometime soon.
The possibility of me spending the rest of my life there always scared me. While this obviously was not meant to be, I know I could have been lazy enough to never leave.
I came here to work for a month in order to pay my trip to the US, now, almost three years later I have a pretty serious job with an indefinite contract. Last year was great. Just the job I wanted at that time. Four days, decent money, no stress, not so repetitive. Most of the time I noticed I didn't even mind going to work so much in the morning.
There's a few things that changed this year though. Most of all this is the busiest year ever, and I am tired already. Euro 2004, Italy & Sweden, Germany... It's fun when you're not so busy that everyday not spent in the office is a day lost. In retrospect, this will of corse be a great year, both in personal and profesional experience, but boy, do I wish it was over already.

I hope I'll be able to get back to school at some point. It'll be dificult financially, but I know that I am ready to finish things of now. Hopefully it is still possible to find a bit of a peaceful job in this day and age. Probably not, but at least I can make lots of money.. right?

Voor de lezer(s) Sunday, 18 April 1:55 pm
Apperantly, a lack of recent updates has let some of you readers down a little bit. I know weblogs are a good cure for short term boredom and acknowledge my responsibility in keeping you entertained. However you must understand that my life is very much a routine affair and as far as adventures and interesting thoughts go I will have to refer you to at least 3 years ago. But since you all (rightfully) still love me so much, here's a few things I want to get off my chest:
-Yesterday we watched kopspijkers for the first time this season, and I can now add it to the long list of favorite tv shows of lore. It doesn't matter to me that tv shows go downhil after 4 or 5 years (kopspijkers had a very long good quality life compared to some other tv shows that were once great), but why is it that lately nothing great replaces the older great stuff. Why did it suck? The whole show revolved around the show itself rather than the outside world. I never really liked Peter Heerschop to begin with but his role in the program is horrible. Do I have to start calling RTL Boulevard the best (rather than one of my favorite) dutch tv shows? Lame. We should be making tv!

-In the rosebush growing on the front wall of our castle, there's a nest of birds. We can see the mom bring little worms from our window. Yesterday I saw the hungry little bird beeks for the first time. Very cool. Tried to take pictures but didn't really work out good. We'll keep you posted. (Anyone got a spair webcam?)

-Iedereen is gek op Mickey is about 23 times better than Iedereen is gek op Donald. I am still pissed off at Disney for putting those retardicle kids from all over the world in between the cartoons. There's not a lot of things those guys are doing right lately anyway.

-Everybody should have the right to be uncle.

The irony Wednesday, 21 April 02:10 am
When I was younger, a lot of boys had the dream to one day make videogames. You could read it in the club nintendo magazine profiles every month. Some kids wrote letters to 'mario' about their group of friends meeting up on a regular basis in someones shed to work on some game. Mario would wish these kids luck, and remark that maybe someday their game might be the next big hit.
I was never that naive. I knew that making videogames was more than imagination and pens and paper. To ever get anywhere you must somehow learn how to program. So I never wasted my time dreaming up cool videogames that would never exist.
Growing up I became quite a bit of a computer nerd, and always had the desire to program stuck in the back of my head. I messed with some command line stuff, in the end getting something graphical running but sort of gave up at that point.

The basic java classes (nerdy readers: school classes) in my short university carreer were a nice oppertunity to get back on track. Java is easy as pie compared to the horor of classic mac toolbox programming. I started to experiment with some game basics: sprites & tiles, scrolling, collision detection etc. The first game I ever wrote was a simple implementation of Tetris, that I think never really worked all that well on any computer but my own (in fact, it didn't run that well on my own system either wich is why it never got beyond very basic functionality). I guess 'write once, run anywhere' doesn't apply when you're just crap at coding.

Java let me experiment with the basics of game programming, however the result was always some tediously slow little application that really wasn't worth spending any more time on. If I ever wanted to put my knowledge to good use I'd better bite the bullet and learn how to build native apps.

I tried to make the leap to C++ once but became horibly frustrated when it took me about a week to get a simple window to display an image, and my efforts at turning this nasty 'project' into a double buffered animation weren't very succesful. I didn't have a lot of good resources, and the API's (monkeys) I was trying to master were pretty obsolete already.

Having made the leap to OS X I took a sniff at Cocoa (in a nuttshell: easy like java, fast like c) and had my double buffered animation runing in about 30 minutes. A small month later I found myself working on my own version of one of the best early nes titles: Balloon Fight.

Very fun to do, very little frustration. After all the geek talk though, the bottom line of my story is that after all these years I am finally able to create simple 2d games. But now that I have reached this personal Walhalla I don't have the slightest idea how to put this knowledge to good use. I can not dig in to that old treehouse club archive to find that great idea I once had. I absolutely suck at making the graphics, etc etc. All this work I should've done 10 years ago!

So here I am recreating a blast from the past, using slightly modified artwork from the original, and a nice background from Parodius (bless that game, by the way). For practice purposes it is fine of corse, but am I not suposed to bring the one game that makes all other games obsolete into this world? Or at least come up with something slightly original? Why did I ever invest all this time into mastering the art of translating the ideas in my head into actual games when there actually was never an idea to begin with?

I guess I feel like an aspiring artist who spent half his life making paint, and can now try and have a go at painting with his first shady product. I better not be crap at this...

the oh so wonderful dara kammerman Monday, 26 April 6:22 pm

last summer when i was visting my hometown, i had decided to join friendster on the off chance that i'd meet somebody that i could get along with in holland. i tried not to expect too much. but then the friendster gods put dara and i together. my friendship with her exceeded all my expectations. from the first moment i saw her i knew that i was looking at a new good friend.

like me dara is american, likes pretty much the same music i do and just appreciates a lot of the same things. she is an english teacher so she can always recommend good books and she is without a doubt one of the most adventerous and brave people i know. i say that cos the girl moved to a new country where she knew no one and started teaching as soon as she got off the plane.

whenever im off to spend time with dara i know its a guaranteed good time. she has been such an excellent friend to me. she is so smart , funny, witty and wonderful. i can always be myself with her and knowing her has made my life in holland more enjoyable.

when i first met her i found out that she would only be here a year but back then a year seemed like forever. now the year is almost up and its almost time for her to go :sigh:

dara dared to make the long out of the way journey to nes this past friday cos i couldnt afford to leave the village. she brought us a bag full of goodies too, the nicest suprise being cupcakes with little plastic clowns/dutch flags on top. dara, martijn and i had such a nice evening drinking, gaming and conversing. when the sun was about to go down we went for a walk and watched all the funny farm animals going about their business. dara made friends with the best goat in nes and i think if he wasnt fenced in he woulda followed all the way back to america.

the next afternoon martijn rode her back into town on the back of his bike. she was a bit apprehensive but sucha good sport. she's always up for stuff.

she's moving away in june and i already miss her.

Nog één nachtje slapen... Thursday, 29 April 11:24 pm
Tomorow is queensday, best day of the year for any remotely ingeburgerde citizen. While lissette was smart enough to flee the country before it turns into a drunk orange mass, andre kuijper made sure to return from his trip in space in time to sell his orbit grown lettuce on the street. Frans Bauer is now ridder in de orde van oranje nassau, and I will get up early to radically extend my collection of classic videogames. it is what makes queensday the most exciting day of the year. I actually am pathetic enough to occasionally dream about the perfect queensday flea market hunt. in a perfect world, this is what I'll find tomorrow (for cheap of corse).

10: Casio SK-1 keyboard
This toy keyboard has reached a cult status pretty much. They're great to play around with. The sample function is funny, but the amount of effects it has is amazing! I have one already, but the adapter broke. This is just one of those 'you have no idea what you're selling' kinda purchase. I could play this thing for hours.
9: Gamegear
Legacy Gameboy Advance. Cool beans. Preferably with the master system player thing and tv tuner.
8: Saturn
I'm getting more and more curious about this failed console that apparently had a limited amount of pretty cool games. It'll surely turn into a space waister though, since games aren't that common for it anyway. I'd still pick this up for cheap.
7: Atari games
I recently bought an atari but I've only got one game. These are always dirt cheap. I once turned down an atari for 4 guilders (about two euro's) because it didn't come with a power cord. The fact that it came with 5 games apparently didn't make up for this back then.
6: Any nes/snes/gameboy game that is worthwhile to own or resell.Since my collection, despite of it's moderate size, covers most of the quality titles that you are able to find on the street, I've made it a policy to also buy games I already own to sell on or trade at a later date. I still haven't gotten rid of last years doubles though.
5: obscure nes peripherals
I am talking about the little robot, the running mat and the powerglove. duh!
4: Nintendo merchandise
Preferably vague and asian, like the great Super Mario Bros. 2 'exciting game' pencilbox/balls in the hole game I once bought. Also nintendo cartoon videos would be nice. Maybe an old issue of club nintendo, or the pretty huge super mario 3 themed suitcase meant to store your nes games. I'll even go for those horrible 'chose your own adventure' books.
3: pirate nintendo carts
and I mean cool ones! I am still looking for the 256 in one (in reality about 120 games) that I once traded for a sega master system. Usually these suckers have ten lamo games on them though, and all have the same games too.
2: game & watch (es)

Since number one is a mission impossible, this is probably the best thing you can find on queensday. Since no one cares about old lcd games they are always highly undervalued. I've found two in my life. One was 2,50 (a bit over a euro), the other 25 or 50 sents. The first one was still working, the last one turned out to be full of water when I opened it (this might have been caused by the traditional queensday weather). Since the batteries are almost always turned into rusty pulp, you never know if they work. But they look damn cool and are worth about 20 times what you pay for them.

1: famicom+disksystem
The ultra cool japanese version of the nes, with the ultra hard to find dinky famicom disk system expansion. The set includes such classic discs as the zelda's, metroid, doki doki panic, mario 2 (aka the lost levels) and some obscure discs with games that were loaded from machines in magazine stands. The japanese lady that sells her sons gear has no idea what it's worth.

The score Friday, 30 April 10:21 pm

While it would've been more fun with lissette, business wise this was the best queensday ever. About time too, because the past two years have been a bit disappointing. With a little help from Camiel (who made some excelent purchases on my behalf and pointed me in the direction of treasure he found earlier once I met up with him) I managed to bring home a backpack + albert heijn bag full of stuff. The yahtzee machine in my backpack was happily bleeping away, constantly reminding me that I was loaded with some great technological toys.
The weather was great as well. I decided to be lame and not get into amsterdam since it would've been a bit of a hassle. Amsterdam looked as packed as can be on tv and I don't really regret deciding not to go.

Anyway, this is what lissette can find all over the place when she gets back:

Almost a collection in its own right

NES Games:
I totally hit the golden shower finding both legends of zelda only 30 minutes apart from eachother. Camiel proved to be a worthy partner finding someone selling almost good as new boxed nes games (even still including original promotional poster & club nintendo subscription form). He bought Rad Racer & Kid Icarus straight away. I later came back for some more.

-Bionic Commando
-Mega Man
-Mega Man II
-Zelda
-Zelda II
-Castlevania
-Road Fighter
-Street Gangs
-Formula 1 sensation
-Galaga
-Mario 3
-Power Blade

Boxed & very complete:
-Mario 2
-Mario 3 (I now have all NES Marios complete in box with manual)
-Rescue Rangers
-Popeye
-Rad Racer (even included the 3d glasses!)
-Kid Icarus (catch of the day, and I wasn't even there...)

SNES:
I think this was the first year that Super Nintendo games really hit rock bottom prise wise. About time of corse!

-Zelda 3 (found out it is the german translation. D'oh!)
-Zelda 3 boxed (bad condition)
-Terranigma boxed (bad condition)
-Asterix & Obelix
-Castlevania IV
-Vortex
-Batman Returns
-Puzzle Bobble/Bust a Move

Gameboy:
A clear lack of gameboy titles this year. I think the one I got is the only one I saw! With a lack of fresh gameboy material, I better not get constipated too often this year.

-Super Mario Land 2

Mega Drive:
Better known as the Genesis overseas. I stumbled upon a Mega Drive II + game for 5 euros. I simply couldn't resist and rushed back to a boy I saw selling games for this system earlier.

-Mega Drive II
-Turtles Tournament fighters (whatever!)
-Sonic
-Sonic 2
-Sonic Spinball

Playstation
Two Japanese titles.
-A sequel to one of those weird chocobo games
-Some Tamagotchi game

Various
-Super Mario world t-shirt (unfortunately not my size)
-Yahtzee machine (the same one boet has, but a lot cheaper)
-Pong machine (works a bit shady, hence not included in the picture)
