 | having had a slow start this morning I decided to boost my spirit a little bit by popping the old 'nintendo sounds' cd in the discman. I made this cd some time ago and never really listened to it again, since it isn't that suitable for listening on the stereo. As was the case with my 'hemelse honderd' mp3 cd, making it was were the real fun was anyway. However, in the morning on the way to work it proved to be quite a party number. Traffic just aint the same with that super mariokart song pumping in the ears. Now I am at work with that great yoshi's island song stuck in my head, and drenched with nostalgic melancholia. |
I wonder how long this weird emotional attachment to the games of lore may continue though. I already own a lot of the games that need owning, and in all honesty, I haven't seen a fresh and innovating game from nintendo since pikmin. Here I was thinking that the Gameboy Advance would be a great opportunity to bring back some of the glory of the 2d era. Alas, nintendo took this a bit too literally and is doing naught but porting snes games.
In the meantime I don't see a lot of games that catch my eye on the competitors platforms, let alone the kind of games that make you squeak in delight. In the world of videogames, I am a cynical old man.
You know those midlife crisis guys that claim music is worthless nowadays? They usually don't go much further than comparing the music of their twelve year old daughter to their own collection of digitally remastered cd's from the sixties and seventies. They miss out on a lot of great stuff because they are too lazy to keep an eye out, but it probably doesn't matter to them because they care more about talking shit then they do about music anyway.
I am the upper middle class gentleman of respectable age. Nintendo is the 60's rock and roll band of legend that never knew when to quit. Mario Sunshine, the Wind Waker, Mario Kart Double Dash, rehashes of the same old thing lacking the inovation, and more importantly, the enthousiasm of their predecesors.
I am still not sure though, if it is me that needs to expand my horizon and look for quality elsewhere, or if the videogame industry needs to acknowledge that complicated and immersive games are great, but sometimes all we need is just a game that's fun and not a lot more. Nintendo seems to follow this philosophy with their mysterious new dual screen machine, but looking at their gbAdvance lineup I am not sure if I can jump from joy yet.
For the moment, the best thing to do still seems to be waiting for queensday. (only four weeks to go!)
