Lissette went out yesterday and bought these for me. She bought herself a dandy warhols cd (weak) and the pixies (decent). I had asked her to get me the gorki cd, and she bought me de poema's single as a bonus.
The gorki cd is a bit of a weird affair. I especially wanted it for the dvd that 'comes with it'. I put that between quotes because I think releasing an hour long cd with bonus dvd that contains everything on the cd plus 3 hours of other material, is a typical case of belgian logic.
So do we like it? Yes we do, to a certain extent. The main thing this release revolves around is a theatershow the guys did after the release of 'vooruitgang'. While most songs do come out nice, I would rather have seen something more rock & roll. The worst gripe though, is that they thought it'd be cool to have special 'guests' play 'along' on a big tv screen. LAME!
Legendary song Mia is almost entirely sung by a pre-recorded flip kowliers, who, by the way, completely fucks the whole thing up (sorry flip). It is just a bit of a shame that watching this theater thing gives you at least 5 good toe crinching momemts.
Ironicly, the +/- 5 songs that are performed on the wonderful lola da musica documentary (on the dvd in it's entirety) are the best performances found on the disc.
Then there's about 5 music videos and 4 tv performances, 3 of wich are play backed staatsloterij-esque things.
In the end, this is a mega package that has a lot of great gorki material on it. I haven't even had the time to listen to the poema's...
Still, the only gorki release that I consider to be a true feast from begin to end is the best of (not live) cd released in 99. I invite you all to give it a listen at your favorite record store. The older (impossible to find) gorki material is just really amazing.
It has been said by many before, but it is a real shame that this band never got foot on the ground in the netherlands.
May I suggest we all call our favorite radio station and request such ubersongs as Mia, Ooit was ik een soldaat, Lang zullen ze leven, Monstertje, Lieve kleine piranha, etc..
There's no way anyone can hear those without going 'what's this?'
World domination, garanteed!
